Medicine Wheel/Whole Systems Approach to Education

In response to growing concerns from teachers and administration at the Elsipogtog School, a needs assessment was carried out in the Spring of 1997.  Teachers and staff were concerned with the emergent special needs in their school and decided to develop a whole school response to Special Needs, rather than focusing on a fragmented, case-by-case approach.  From this needs assessment many programmes resulted that improved the school climate for special needs students and the student body as a whole.

This approach focused on bringing the entire school system to an enhanced, healthy state by focusing on improving the school climate in the areas of Heart, Hand, Mind and Spirit.  This Medicine Wheel approach to education refocused attention to the relational aspects of education and brought attention to the importance of relationship in the educational setting.
